           WhilewaitingfortheannouncementofhisappointmenttothecommitteePrinceAndrewlookeduphisformeracquaintances,particularlythoseheknewtobeinpowerandwhoseaidhemightneed.InPetersburghenowexperiencedthesamefeelinghehadhadontheeveofabattle,whentroubledbyanxiouscuriosityandirresistiblyattractedtotherulingcircleswherethefuture,onwhichthefateofmillionsdepended,wasbeingshaped.Fromtheirritationoftheoldermen,thecuriosityoftheuninitiated,thereserveoftheinitiated,thehurryandpreoccupationofeveryone,andtheinnumerablecommitteesandcommissionsofwhoseexistencehelearnedeveryday,hefeltthatnow,in1809,hereinPetersburgavastcivilconflictwasinpreparation,thecommanderinchiefofwhichwasamysteriouspersonhedidnotknow,butwhowassupposedtobeamanofgenius—Speránski.AndthismovementofreconstructionofwhichPrinceAndrewhadavagueidea,andSperánskiitschiefpromoter,begantointeresthimsokeenlythatthequestionofthearmyregulationsquicklyrecededtoasecondaryplaceinhisconsciousness.

           PrinceAndrewwasmostfavorablyplacedtosecuregoodreceptioninthehighestandmostdiversePetersburgcirclesoftheday.Thereformingpartycordiallywelcomedandcourtedhim,inthefirstplacebecausehewasreputedtobecleverandverywellread,andsecondlybecausebyliberatinghisserfshehadobtainedthereputationofbeingaliberal.
