           Onthemorningofthetwenty-fifthPierrewasleavingMozháysk.Atthedescentofthehighsteephill,downwhichawindingroadledoutofthetownpastthecathedralontheright,whereaservicewasbeingheldandthebellswereringing,Pierregotoutofhisvehicleandproceededonfoot.Behindhimacavalryregimentwascomingdownthehillprecededbyitssingers.Cominguptowardhimwasatrainofcartscarryingmenwhohadbeenwoundedintheengagementthedaybefore.Thepeasantdrivers,shoutingandlashingtheirhorses,keptcrossingfromsidetoside.Thecarts,ineachofwhichthreeorfourwoundedsoldierswerelyingorsitting,joltedoverthestonesthathadbeenthrownonthesteepinclinetomakeitsomethinglikearoad.Thewounded,bandagedwithrags,withpalecheeks,compressedlips,andknittedbrows,heldontothesidesofthecartsastheywerejoltedagainstoneanother.Almostallofthemstaredwithnaïve,childlikecuriosityatPierre’swhitehatandgreenswallow-tailcoat.

           Pierre’scoachmanshoutedangrilyattheconvoyofwoundedtokeeptoonesideoftheroad.Thecavalryregiment,asitdescendedthehillwithitssingers,surroundedPierre’scarriageandblockedtheroad.Pierrestopped,beingpressedagainstthesideofthecuttinginwhichtheroadran.Thesunshinefrombehindthehilldidnotpenetrateintothecuttingandthereitwascoldanddamp,butabovePierre’sheadwasthebrightAugustsunshineandthebellssoundedmerrily.OneofthecartswithwoundedstoppedbythesideoftheroadclosetoPierre.
