           ThePávlogradHussarswerestationedtwomilesfromBraunau.ThesquadroninwhichNicholasRostóvservedasacadetwasquarteredintheGermanvillageofSalzeneck.Thebestquartersinthevillagewereassignedtocavalry-captainDenísov,thesquadroncommander,knownthroughoutthewholecavalrydivisionasVáskaDenísov.CadetRostóv,eversincehehadovertakentheregimentinPoland,hadlivedwiththesquadroncommander.

           OnOctober11,thedaywhenallwasastiratheadquartersoverthenewsofMack’sdefeat,thecamplifeoftheofficersofthissquadronwasproceedingasusual.Denísov,whohadbeenlosingatcardsallnight,hadnotyetcomehomewhenRostóvrodebackearlyinthemorningfromaforagingexpedition.Rostóvinhiscadetuniform,withajerktohishorse,rodeuptotheporch,swunghislegoverthesaddlewithasuppleyouthfulmovement,stoodforamomentinthestirrupasifloathetopartfromhishorse,andatlastsprangdownandcalledtohisorderly.

           “Ah,Bondarénko,dearfriend!”saidhetothehussarwhorushedupheadlongtothehorse.“Walkhimupanddown,mydearfellow,”hecontinued,withthatgaybrotherlycordialitywhichgoodheartedyoungpeopleshowtoeveryonewhentheyarehappy.

           “Yes,yourexcellency,”answeredtheUkrainiangaily,tossinghishead.

           “Mind,walkhimupanddownwell!”

           Anotherhussaralsorushedtowardthehorse,butBondarénkohadalreadythrownthereinsofthesnafflebridleoverthehorse’shead.Itwasevidentthatthecadetwasliberalwithhistipsandthatitpaidtoservehim.
