           Havingriddenroundthewholelinefromrightflanktoleft,PrinceAndrewmadehiswayuptothebatteryfromwhichthestaffofficerhadtoldhimthewholefieldcouldbeseen.Herehedismounted,andstoppedbesidethefarthestofthefourunlimberedcannon.Beforethegunsanartillerysentrywaspacingupanddown;hestoodatattentionwhentheofficerarrived,butatasignresumedhismeasured,monotonouspacing.Behindthegunsweretheirlimbersandstillfartherbackpicketropesandartillerymen’sbonfires.Totheleft,notfarfromthefarthestcannon,wasasmall,newlyconstructedwattleshedfromwhichcamethesoundofofficers’voicesineagerconversation.

           ItwastruethataviewovernearlythewholeRussianpositionandthegreaterpartoftheenemy’sopenedoutfromthisbattery.Justfacingit,onthecrestoftheoppositehill,thevillageofSchönGraberncouldbeseen,andinthreeplacestoleftandrighttheFrenchtroopsamidthesmokeoftheircampfires,thegreaterpartofwhomwereevidentlyinthevillageitselfandbehindthehill.Totheleftfromthatvillage,amidthesmoke,wassomethingresemblingabattery,butitwasimpossibletoseeitclearlywiththenakedeye.OurrightflankwaspostedonarathersteepinclinewhichdominatedtheFrenchposition.Ourinfantrywerestationedthere,andatthefarthestpointthedragoons.Inthecenter,whereTúshin’sbatterystoodandfromwhichPrinceAndrewwassurveyingtheposition,wastheeasiestandmostdirectdescentandascenttothebrookseparatingusfromSchönGrabern.
