           ThefifthofNovemberwasthefirstdayofwhatiscalledthebattleofKrásnoe.Towardevening—aftermuchdisputingandmanymistakesmadebygeneralswhodidnotgototheirproperplaces,andafteradjutantshadbeensentaboutwithcounterorders—whenithadbecomeplainthattheenemywaseverywhereinflightandthattherecouldandwouldbenobattle,KutúzovleftKrásnoeandwenttoDóbroewhitherhisheadquartershadthatdaybeentransferred.

           Thedaywasclearandfrosty.KutúzovrodetoDóbroeonhisplumplittlewhitehorse,followedbyanenormoussuiteofdiscontentedgeneralswhowhisperedamongthemselvesbehindhisback.AllalongtheroadgroupsofFrenchprisonerscapturedthatday(therewereseventhousandofthem)werecrowdingtowarmthemselvesatcampfires.NearDóbroeanimmensecrowdoftatteredprisoners,buzzingwithtalkandwrappedandbandagedinanythingtheyhadbeenabletogetholdof,werestandingintheroadbesidealongrowofunharnessedFrenchguns.AttheapproachofthecommanderinchiefthebuzzoftalkceasedandalleyeswerefixedonKutúzovwho,wearingawhitecapwitharedbandandapaddedovercoatthatbulgedonhisroundshoulders,movedslowlyalongtheroadonhiswhitehorse.Oneofthegeneralswasreportingtohimwherethegunsandprisonershadbeencaptured.

           Kutúzovseemedpreoccupiedanddidnotlistentowhatthegeneralwassaying.Hescreweduphiseyeswithadissatisfiedlookashegazedattentivelyandfixedlyattheseprisoners,whopresentedaspeciallywretchedappearance.
