           Oneofthemostobviousandadvantageousdeparturesfromtheso-calledlawsofwaristheactionofscatteredgroupsagainstmenpressedtogetherinamass.Suchactionalwaysoccursinwarsthattakeonanationalcharacter.Insuchactions,insteadoftwocrowdsopposingeachother,themendisperse,attacksingly,runawaywhenattackedbystrongerforces,butagainattackwhenopportunityoffers.ThiswasdonebytheguerrillasinSpain,bythemountaintribesintheCaucasus,andbytheRussiansin1812.

           Peoplehavecalledthiskindofwar“guerrillawarfare”andassumethatbysocallingittheyhaveexplaineditsmeaning.Butsuchawardoesnotfitinunderanyruleandisdirectlyopposedtoawell-knownruleoftacticswhichisacceptedasinfallible.Thatrulesaysthatanattackershouldconcentratehisforcesinordertobestrongerthanhisopponentatthemomentofconflict.

           Guerrillawar(alwayssuccessful,ashistoryshows)directlyinfringesthatrule.

           Thiscontradictionarisesfromthefactthatmilitaryscienceassumesthestrengthofanarmytobeidenticalwithitsnumbers.Militarysciencesaysthatthemoretroopsthegreaterthestrength.Lesgrosbataillonsonttoujoursraison.*
