           TheFifthcompanywasbivouackingattheveryedgeoftheforest.Ahugecampfirewasblazingbrightlyinthemidstofthesnow,lightingupthebranchesoftreesheavywithhoarfrost.

           Aboutmidnighttheyheardthesoundofstepsinthesnowoftheforest,andthecracklingofdrybranches.

           “Abear,lads,”saidoneofthemen.
