           Fromearlymorningthesmartcleantroopswereonthemove,forminguponthefieldbeforethefortress.Nowthousandsoffeetandbayonetsmovedandhaltedattheofficers’command,turnedwithbannersflying,formedupatintervals,andwheeledroundothersimilarmassesofinfantryindifferentuniforms;nowwasheardtherhythmicbeatofhoofsandthejinglingofshowycavalryinblue,red,andgreenbraideduniforms,withsmartlydressedbandsmeninfrontmountedonblack,roan,orgrayhorses;thenagain,spreadingoutwiththebrazenclatterofthepolishedshiningcannonthatquiveredontheguncarriagesandwiththesmelloflinstocks,cametheartillerywhichcrawledbetweentheinfantryandcavalryandtookupitsappointedposition.Notonlythegeneralsinfullparadeuniforms,withtheirthinorthickwaistsdrawnintotheutmost,theirredneckssqueezedintotheirstiffcollars,andwearingscarvesandalltheirdecorations,notonlytheelegant,pomadedofficers,buteverysoldierwithhisfreshlywashedandshavenfaceandhisweaponscleanandpolishedtotheutmost,andeveryhorsegroomedtillitscoatshonelikesatinandeveryhairofitswettedmanelaysmooth—feltthatnosmallmatterwashappening,butanimportantandsolemnaffair.
