           ThedreadfulnewsofthebattleofBorodinó,ofourlossesinkilledandwounded,andthestillmoreterriblenewsofthelossofMoscowreachedVorónezhinthemiddleofSeptember.PrincessMary,havinglearnedofherbrother’swoundonlyfromtheGazetteandhavingnodefinitenewsofhim,prepared(soNicholasheard,hehadnotseenheragainhimself)tosetoffinsearchofPrinceAndrew.

           WhenhereceivedthenewsofthebattleofBorodinóandtheabandonmentofMoscow,Rostóvwasnotseizedwithdespair,anger,thedesireforvengeance,oranyfeelingofthatkind,buteverythinginVorónezhsuddenlyseemedtohimdullandtiresome,andheexperiencedanindefinitefeelingofshameandawkwardness.Theconversationsheheardseemedtohiminsincere;hedidnotknowhowtojudgealltheseaffairsandfeltthatonlyintheregimentwouldeverythingagainbecomecleartohim.Hemadehastetofinishbuyingthehorses,andoftenbecameunreasonablyangrywithhisservantandsquadronquartermaster.
