           Atfiveinthemorningitwasstillquitedark.Thetroopsofthecenter,thereserves,andBagratión’srightflankhadnotyetmoved,butontheleftflankthecolumnsofinfantry,cavalry,andartillery,whichweretobethefirsttodescendtheheightstoattacktheFrenchrightflankanddriveitintotheBohemianmountainsaccordingtoplan,werealreadyupandastir.Thesmokeofthecampfires,intowhichtheywerethrowingeverythingsuperfluous,madetheeyessmart.Itwascoldanddark.Theofficerswerehurriedlydrinkingteaandbreakfasting,thesoldiers,munchingbiscuitandbeatingatattoowiththeirfeettowarmthemselves,gatheringroundthefiresthrowingintotheflamestheremainsofsheds,chairs,tables,wheels,tubs,andeverythingthattheydidnotwantorcouldnotcarryawaywiththem.AustriancolumnguidesweremovinginandoutamongtheRussiantroopsandservedasheraldsoftheadvance.AssoonasanAustrianofficershowedhimselfnearacommandingofficer’squarters,theregimentbegantomove:thesoldiersranfromthefires,thrusttheirpipesintotheirboots,theirbagsintothecarts,gottheirmusketsready,andformedrank.Theofficersbuttoneduptheircoats,buckledontheirswordsandpouches,andmovedalongtheranksshouting.Thetraindriversandorderliesharnessedandpackedthewagonsandtiedontheloads.Theadjutantsandbattalionandregimentalcommandersmounted,crossedthemselves,gavefinalinstructions,orders,andcommissionstothebaggagemenwhoremainedbehind,andthemonotonoustrampofthousandsoffeetresounded.
