           Pierrewasshownintothelarge,brightlylitdiningroom;afewminuteslaterheheardfootstepsandPrincessMaryenteredwithNatásha.Natáshawascalm,thoughasevereandgraveexpressionhadagainsettledonherface.Theyallthreeofthemnowexperiencedthatfeelingofawkwardnesswhichusuallyfollowsafteraseriousandheartfelttalk.Itisimpossibletogobacktothesameconversation,totalkoftriflesisawkward,andyetthedesiretospeakisthereandsilenceseemslikeaffectation.Theywentsilentlytotable.Thefootmendrewbackthechairsandpushedthemupagain.Pierreunfoldedhiscoldtablenapkinand,resolvingtobreakthesilence,lookedatNatáshaandatPrincessMary.Theyhadevidentlybothformedthesameresolution;theeyesofbothshonewithsatisfactionandaconfessionthatbesidessorrowlifealsohasjoy.

           “Doyoutakevodka,Count?”askedPrincessMary,andthosewordssuddenlybanishedtheshadowsofthepast.“Nowtellusaboutyourself,”saidshe.“Onehearssuchimprobablewondersaboutyou.”
