           ThechiefactionofthebattleofBorodinówasfoughtwithintheseventhousandfeetbetweenBorodinóandBagratión’sflèches.Beyondthatspacetherewas,ontheoneside,ademonstrationmadebytheRussianswithUvárov’scavalryatmidday,andontheotherside,beyondUtítsa,Poniatowski’scollisionwithTúchkov;butthesetwoweredetachedandfeebleactionsincomparisonwithwhattookplaceinthecenterofthebattlefield.OnthefieldbetweenBorodinóandtheflèches,besidethewood,thechiefactionofthedaytookplaceonanopenspacevisiblefrombothsidesandwasfoughtinthesimplestandmostartlessway.

           Thebattlebeganonbothsideswithacannonadefromseveralhundredguns.

           Thenwhenthewholefieldwascoveredwithsmoke,twodivisions,Campan’sandDessaix’s,advancedfromtheFrenchright,whileMurat’stroopsadvancedonBorodinófromtheirleft.
