Chapter 3

           

           ThefundamentalandessentialsignificanceoftheEuropeaneventsofthebeginningofthenineteenthcenturyliesinthemovementofthemassoftheEuropeanpeoplesfromwesttoeastandafterwardsfromeasttowest.Thecommencementofthatmovementwasthemovementfromwesttoeast.ForthepeoplesofthewesttobeabletomaketheirwarlikemovementtoMoscowitwasnecessary:(1)thattheyshouldformthemselvesintoamilitarygroupofasizeabletoendureacollisionwiththewarlikemilitarygroupoftheeast,(2)thattheyshouldabandonallestablishedtraditionsandcustoms,and(3)thatduringtheirmilitarymovementtheyshouldhaveattheirheadamanwhocouldjustifytohimselfandtothemthedeceptions,robberies,andmurderswhichwouldhavetobecommittedduringthatmovement.

           AndbeginningwiththeFrenchRevolutiontheoldinadequatelylargegroupwasdestroyed,aswellastheoldhabitsandtraditions,andstepbystepagroupwasformedoflargerdimensionswithnewcustomsandtraditions,andamanwasproducedwhowouldstandattheheadofthecomingmovementandbeartheresponsibilityforallthathadtobedone.

           Amanwithoutconvictions,withouthabits,withouttraditions,withoutaname,andnotevenaFrenchman,emerges—bywhatseemthestrangestchances—fromamongalltheseethingFrenchparties,andwithoutjoininganyoneofthemisborneforwardtoaprominentposition.

           Theignoranceofhiscolleagues,theweaknessandinsignificanceofhisopponents,thefranknessofhisfalsehoods,andthedazzlingandself-confidentlimitationsofthismanraisehimtotheheadofthearmy.
