           PrinceAndrewreachedthegeneralheadquartersofthearmyattheendofJune.Thefirstarmy,withwhichwastheEmperor,occupiedthefortifiedcampatDrissa;thesecondarmywasretreating,tryingtoeffectajunctionwiththefirstonefromwhichitwassaidtobecutoffbylargeFrenchforces.EveryonewasdissatisfiedwiththegeneralcourseofaffairsintheRussianarmy,butnooneanticipatedanydangerofinvasionoftheRussianprovinces,andnoonethoughtthewarwouldextendfartherthanthewestern,thePolish,provinces.

           PrinceAndrewfoundBarclaydeTolly,towhomhehadbeenassigned,onthebankoftheDrissa.Astherewasnotasingletownorlargevillageinthevicinityofthecamp,theimmensenumberofgeneralsandcourtiersaccompanyingthearmywerelivinginthebesthousesofthevillagesonbothsidesoftheriver,overaradiusofsixmiles.BarclaydeTollywasquarterednearlythreemilesfromtheEmperor.HereceivedBolkónskistifflyandcoldlyandtoldhiminhisforeignaccentthathewouldmentionhimtotheEmperorforadecisionastohisemployment,butaskedhimmeanwhiletoremainonhisstaff.AnatoleKurágin,whomPrinceAndrewhadhopedtofindwiththearmy,wasnotthere.HehadgonetoPetersburg,butPrinceAndrewwasgladtohearthis.Hismindwasoccupiedbytheinterestsofthecenterthatwasconductingagiganticwar,andhewasgladtobefreeforawhilefromthedistractioncausedbythethoughtofKurágin.
