           Whiletheseconversationsweregoingoninthereceptionroomandtheprincess’room,acarriagecontainingPierre(whohadbeensentfor)andAnnaMikháylovna(whofounditnecessarytoaccompanyhim)wasdrivingintothecourtofCountBezúkhov’shouse.Asthewheelsrolledsoftlyoverthestrawbeneaththewindows,AnnaMikháylovna,havingturnedwithwordsofcomforttohercompanion,realizedthathewasasleepinhiscornerandwokehimup.Rousinghimself,PierrefollowedAnnaMikháylovnaoutofthecarriage,andonlythenbegantothinkoftheinterviewwithhisdyingfatherwhichawaitedhim.Henoticedthattheyhadnotcometothefrontentrancebuttothebackdoor.Whilehewasgettingdownfromthecarriagestepstwomen,wholookedliketradespeople,ranhurriedlyfromtheentranceandhidintheshadowofthewall.Pausingforamoment,Pierrenoticedseveralothermenofthesamekindhidingintheshadowofthehouseonbothsides.ButneitherAnnaMikháylovnanorthefootmannorthecoachman,whocouldnothelpseeingthesepeople,tookanynoticeofthem.“Itseemstobeallright,”Pierreconcluded,andfollowedAnnaMikháylovna.Shehurriedlyascendedthenarrowdimlylitstonestaircase,callingtoPierre,whowaslaggingbehind,tofollow.Thoughhedidnotseewhyitwasnecessaryforhimtogotothecountatall,stilllesswhyhehadtogobythebackstairs,yetjudgingbyAnnaMikháylovna’sairofassuranceandhaste,Pierreconcludedthatitwasallabsolutelynecessary.
