           FourweekshadpassedsincePierrehadbeentakenprisonerandthoughtheFrenchhadofferedtomovehimfromthemen’stotheofficers’shed,hehadstayedintheshedwherehewasfirstput.

           InburnedanddevastatedMoscowPierreexperiencedalmosttheextremelimitsofprivationamancanendure;butthankstohisphysicalstrengthandhealth,ofwhichhehadtillthenbeenunconscious,andthanksespeciallytothefactthattheprivationscamesograduallythatitwasimpossibletosaywhentheybegan,heenduredhispositionnotonlylightlybutjoyfully.Andjustatthistimeheobtainedthetranquillityandeaseofmindhehadformerlystriveninvaintoreach.Hehadlongsoughtindifferentwaysthattranquillityofmind,thatinnerharmonywhichhadsoimpressedhiminthesoldiersatthebattleofBorodinó.Hehadsoughtitinphilanthropy,inFreemasonry,inthedissipationsoftownlife,inwine,inheroicfeatsofself-sacrifice,andinromanticloveforNatásha;hehadsoughtitbyreasoning—andallthesequestsandexperimentshadfailedhim.Andnowwithoutthinkingaboutithehadfoundthatpeaceandinnerharmonyonlythroughthehorrorofdeath,throughprivation,andthroughwhatherecognizedinKaratáev.

           Thosedreadfulmomentshehadlivedthroughattheexecutionshadasitwereforeverwashedawayfromhisimaginationandmemorytheagitatingthoughtsandfeelingsthathadformerlyseemedsoimportant.ItdidnotnowoccurtohimtothinkofRussia,orthewar,orpolitics,orNapoleon.
