           NotonlydidPrinceAndrewknowhewoulddie,buthefeltthathewasdyingandwasalreadyhalfdead.Hewasconsciousofanaloofnessfromeverythingearthlyandastrangeandjoyouslightnessofexistence.Withouthasteoragitationheawaitedwhatwascoming.Thatinexorable,eternal,distant,andunknownthepresenceofwhichhehadfeltcontinuallyallhislife—wasnowneartohimand,bythestrangelightnessheexperienced,almostcomprehensibleandpalpable....

           Formerlyhehadfearedtheend.Hehadtwiceexperiencedthatterriblytormentingfearofdeath—theend—butnowhenolongerunderstoodthatfear.

           Hehadfeltitforthefirsttimewhentheshellspunlikeatopbeforehim,andhelookedatthefallowfield,thebushes,andthesky,andknewthathewasfacetofacewithdeath.Whenhecametohimselfafterbeingwoundedandtheflowerofeternal,unfetteredlovehadinstantlyunfoldeditselfinhissoulasiffreedfromthebondageoflifethathadrestrainedit,henolongerfeareddeathandceasedtothinkaboutit.

           Duringthehoursofsolitude,suffering,andpartialdeliriumhespentafterhewaswounded,themoredeeplyhepenetratedintothenewprincipleofeternalloverevealedtohim,themoreheunconsciouslydetachedhimselffromearthlylife.Toloveeverythingandeverybodyandalwaystosacrificeoneselfforlovemeantnottoloveanyone,nottolivethisearthlylife.Andthemoreimbuedhebecamewiththatprincipleoflove,themoreherenouncedlifeandthemorecompletelyhedestroyedthatdreadfulbarrierwhich—intheabsenceofsuchlove—standsbetweenlifeanddeath.
