           AfterPrinceAndrew’sdeathNatáshaandPrincessMaryalikefeltthis.Droopinginspiritandclosingtheireyesbeforethemenacingcloudofdeaththatoverhungthem,theydarednotlooklifeintheface.Theycarefullyguardedtheiropenwoundsfromanyroughandpainfulcontact.Everything:acarriagepassingrapidlyinthestreet,asummonstodinner,themaid’sinquirywhatdresstoprepare,orworsestillanywordofinsincereorfeeblesympathy,seemedaninsult,painfullyirritatedthewound,interruptingthatnecessaryquietinwhichtheybothtriedtolistentothesternanddreadfulchoirthatstillresoundedintheirimagination,andhinderedtheirgazingintothosemysteriouslimitlessvistasthatforaninstanthadopenedoutbeforethem.

           Onlywhenalonetogetherweretheyfreefromsuchoutrageandpain.Theyspokelittleeventooneanother,andwhentheydiditwasofveryunimportantmatters.

           Bothavoidedanyallusiontothefuture.Toadmitthepossibilityofafutureseemedtothemtoinsulthismemory.Stillmorecarefullydidtheyavoidanythingrelatingtohimwhowasdead.
