           InAprilthetroopswereenlivenedbynewsoftheEmperor’sarrival,butRostóvhadnochanceofbeingpresentatthereviewheheldatBartenstein,asthePávlogradswereattheoutpostsfarbeyondthatplace.

           Theywerebivouacking.DenísovandRostóvwerelivinginanearthhut,dugoutforthembythesoldiersandroofedwithbranchesandturf.Thehutwasmadeinthefollowingmanner,whichhadthencomeintovogue.Atrenchwasdugthreeandahalffeetwide,fourfeeteightinchesdeep,andeightfeetlong.Atoneendofthetrench,stepswerecutoutandtheseformedtheentranceandvestibule.Thetrenchitselfwastheroom,inwhichtheluckyones,suchasthesquadroncommander,hadaboard,lyingonpilesattheendoppositetheentrance,toserveasatable.Oneachsideofthetrench,theearthwascutouttoabreadthofabouttwoandahalffeet,andthisdiddutyforbedsteadsandcouches.Theroofwassoconstructedthatonecouldstandupinthemiddleofthetrenchandcouldevensituponthebedsifonedrewclosetothetable.Denísov,whowaslivingluxuriouslybecausethesoldiersofhissquadronlikedhim,hadalsoaboardintheroofatthefartherend,withapieceof(brokenbutmended)glassinitforawindow.Whenitwasverycold,embersfromthesoldiers’campfirewereplacedonabentsheetofirononthestepsinthe“receptionroom”—asDenísovcalledthatpartofthehut—anditwasthensowarmthattheofficers,ofwhomtherewerealwayssomewithDenísovandRostóv,satintheirshirtsleeves.
