           OnlytheexpressionofthewilloftheDeity,notdependentontime,canrelatetoawholeseriesofeventsoccurringoveraperiodofyearsorcenturies,andonlytheDeity,independentofeverything,canbyHissolewilldeterminethedirectionofhumanity’smovement;butmanactsintimeandhimselftakespartinwhatoccurs.

           Reinstatingthefirstconditionomitted,thatoftime,weseethatnocommandcanbeexecutedwithoutsomeprecedingorderhavingbeengivenrenderingtheexecutionofthelastcommandpossible.

           Nocommandeverappearsspontaneously,oritselfcoversawholeseriesofoccurrences;buteachcommandfollowsfromanother,andneverreferstoawholeseriesofeventsbutalwaystoonemomentonlyofanevent.

           When,forinstance,wesaythatNapoleonorderedarmiestogotowar,wecombineinonesimultaneousexpressionawholeseriesofconsecutivecommandsdependentoneonanother.NapoleoncouldnothavecommandedaninvasionofRussiaandneverdidso.TodayheorderedsuchandsuchpaperstobewrittentoVienna,toBerlin,andtoPetersburg;tomorrowsuchandsuchdecreesandorderstothearmy,thefleet,thecommissariat,andsoonandsoon—millionsofcommands,whichformedawholeseriescorrespondingtoaseriesofeventswhichbroughttheFrencharmiesintoRussia.
