           TheRussianarmywascommandedbyKutúzovandhisstaff,andalsobytheEmperorfromPetersburg.BeforethenewsoftheabandonmentofMoscowhadbeenreceivedinPetersburg,adetailedplanofthewholecampaignhadbeendrawnupandsenttoKutúzovforhisguidance.ThoughthisplanhadbeendrawnuponthesuppositionthatMoscowwasstillinourhands,itwasapprovedbythestaffandacceptedasabasisforaction.Kutúzovonlyrepliedthatmovementsarrangedfromadistancewerealwaysdifficulttoexecute.Sofreshinstructionsweresentforthesolutionofdifficultiesthatmightbeencountered,aswellasfreshpeoplewhoweretowatchKutúzov’sactionsandreportuponthem.

           Besidesthis,thewholestaffoftheRussianarmywasnowreorganized.ThepostsleftvacantbyBagratión,whohadbeenkilled,andbyBarclay,whohadgoneawayindudgeon,hadtobefilled.VeryseriousconsiderationwasgiventothequestionwhetheritwouldbebettertoputAinB’splaceandBinD’s,oronthecontrarytoputDinA’splace,andsoon—asifanythingmorethanA’sorB’ssatisfactiondependedonthis.

           AsaresultofthehostilitybetweenKutúzovandBennigsen,hisChiefofStaff,thepresenceofconfidentialrepresentativesoftheEmperor,andthesetransfers,amorethanusuallycomplicatedplayofpartieswasgoingonamongthestaffofthearmy.AwasunderminingB,DwasunderminingC,andsooninallpossiblecombinationsandpermutations.
