           PrinceAndrew’sregimentwasamongthereserveswhichtillafteroneo’clockwerestationedinactivebehindSemënovsk,underheavyartilleryfire.Towardtwoo’clocktheregiment,havingalreadylostmorethantwohundredmen,wasmovedforwardintoatrampledoatfieldinthegapbetweenSemënovskandtheKnollBattery,wherethousandsofmenperishedthatdayandonwhichanintense,concentratedfirefromseveralhundredenemygunswasdirectedbetweenoneandtwoo’clock.

           Withoutmovingfromthatspotorfiringasingleshottheregimentherelostanotherthirdofitsmen.Frominfrontandespeciallyfromtheright,intheunliftingsmokethegunsboomed,andoutofthemysteriousdomainofsmokethatoverlaythewholespaceinfront,quickhissingcannonballsandslowwhistlingshellsflewunceasingly.Attimes,asiftoallowthemarespite,aquarterofanhourpassedduringwhichthecannonballsandshellsallflewoverhead,butsometimesseveralmenweretornfromtheregimentinaminuteandtheslainwerecontinuallybeingdraggedawayandthewoundedcarriedoff.

           Witheachfreshblowlessandlesschanceofliferemainedforthosenotyetkilled.Theregimentstoodincolumnsofbattalion,threehundredpacesapart,butneverthelessthemenwerealwaysinoneandthesamemood.Allalikeweretaciturnandmorose.Talkwasrarelyheardintheranks,anditceasedaltogethereverytimethethudofasuccessfulshotandthecryof“stretchers!”washeard.Mostofthetime,bytheirofficers’order,themensatontheground.
