           OnourrightflankcommandedbyBagratión,atnineo’clockthebattlehadnotyetbegun.NotwishingtoagreetoDolgorúkov’sdemandtocommencetheaction,andwishingtoavertresponsibilityfromhimself,PrinceBagratiónproposedtoDolgorúkovtosendtoinquireofthecommanderinchief.Bagratiónknewthatasthedistancebetweenthetwoflankswasmorethansixmiles,evenifthemessengerwerenotkilled(whichheverylikelywouldbe),andfoundthecommanderinchief(whichwouldbeverydifficult),hewouldnotbeabletogetbackbeforeevening.
