           PrinceVasíliwasnotamanwhodeliberatelythoughtouthisplans.Stilllessdidhethinkofinjuringanyoneforhisownadvantage.Hewasmerelyamanoftheworldwhohadgotonandtowhomgettingonhadbecomeahabit.Schemesanddevicesforwhichheneverrightlyaccountedtohimself,butwhichformedthewholeinterestofhislife,wereconstantlyshapingthemselvesinhismind,arisingfromthecircumstancesandpersonshemet.Oftheseplanshehadnotmerelyoneortwoinhisheadbutdozens,someonlybeginningtoformthemselves,someapproachingachievement,andsomeincourseofdisintegration.Hedidnot,forinstance,saytohimself:“Thismannowhasinfluence,Imustgainhisconfidenceandfriendshipandthroughhimobtainaspecialgrant.”Nordidhesaytohimself:“Pierreisarichman,ImustenticehimtomarrymydaughterandlendmethefortythousandrublesIneed.”Butwhenhecameacrossamanofpositionhisinstinctimmediatelytoldhimthatthismancouldbeuseful,andwithoutanypremeditationPrinceVasílitookthefirstopportunitytogainhisconfidence,flatterhim,becomeintimatewithhim,andfinallymakehisrequest.

           HehadPierreathandinMoscowandprocuredforhimanappointmentasGentlemanoftheBedchamber,whichatthattimeconferredthestatusofCouncilorofState,andinsistedontheyoungmanaccompanyinghimtoPetersburgandstayingathishouse.Withapparentabsent-mindedness,yetwithunhesitatingassurancethathewasdoingtherightthing,PrinceVasílidideverythingtogetPierretomarryhisdaughter.
