           InPetersburgatthattimeacomplicatedstrugglewasbeingcarriedonwithgreaterheatthaneverinthehighestcircles,betweenthepartiesofRumyántsev,theFrench,MáryaFëdorovna,theTsarévich,andothers,drownedasusualbythebuzzingofthecourtdrones.Butthecalm,luxuriouslifeofPetersburg,concernedonlyaboutphantomsandreflectionsofreallife,wentoninitsoldwayandmadeithard,exceptbyagreateffort,torealizethedangerandthedifficultpositionoftheRussianpeople.Therewerethesamereceptionsandballs,thesameFrenchtheater,thesamecourtinterestsandserviceinterestsandintriguesasusual.Onlyintheveryhighestcircleswereattemptsmadetokeepinmindthedifficultiesoftheactualposition.StorieswerewhisperedofhowdifferentlythetwoEmpressesbehavedinthesedifficultcircumstances.TheEmpressMárya,concernedforthewelfareofthecharitableandeducationalinstitutionsunderherpatronage,hadgivendirectionsthattheyshouldallberemovedtoKazán,andthethingsbelongingtotheseinstitutionshadalreadybeenpackedup.TheEmpressElisabeth,however,whenaskedwhatinstructionsshewouldbepleasedtogive—withhercharacteristicRussianpatriotismhadrepliedthatshecouldgivenodirectionsaboutstateinstitutionsforthatwastheaffairofthesovereign,butasfarasshepersonallywasconcernedshewouldbethelasttoquitPetersburg.
