           Silenceensued.Thecountesslookedathercallers,smilingaffably,butnotconcealingthefactthatshewouldnotbedistressediftheynowroseandtooktheirleave.Thevisitor’sdaughterwasalreadysmoothingdownherdresswithaninquiringlookathermother,whensuddenlyfromthenextroomwereheardthefootstepsofboysandgirlsrunningtothedoorandthenoiseofachairfallingover,andagirlofthirteen,hidingsomethinginthefoldsofhershortmuslinfrock,dartedinandstoppedshortinthemiddleoftheroom.Itwasevidentthatshehadnotintendedherflighttobringhersofar.Behindherinthedoorwayappearedastudentwithacrimsoncoatcollar,anofficeroftheGuards,agirloffifteen,andaplumprosy-facedboyinashortjacket.

           Thecountjumpedupand,swayingfromsidetoside,spreadhisarmswideandthrewthemroundthelittlegirlwhohadrunin.

           “Ah,heresheis!”heexclaimedlaughing.“Mypet,whosenamedayitis.Mydearpet!”

           “Machère,thereisatimeforeverything,”saidthecountesswithfeignedseverity.“Youspoilher,Ilyá,”sheadded,turningtoherhusband.

           “Howdoyoudo,mydear?Iwishyoumanyhappyreturnsofyournameday,”saidthevisitor.“Whatacharmingchild,”sheadded,addressingthemother.
