           Thevalet,returningtothecottage,informedthecountthatMoscowwasburning.Thecountdonnedhisdressinggownandwentouttolook.SónyaandMadameSchoss,whohadnotyetundressed,wentoutwithhim.OnlyNatáshaandthecountessremainedintheroom.Pétyawasnolongerwiththefamily,hehadgoneonwithhisregimentwhichwasmakingforTróitsa.

           Thecountess,onhearingthatMoscowwasonfire,begantocry.Natásha,pale,withafixedlook,wassittingonthebenchundertheiconsjustwhereshehadsatdownonarrivingandpaidnoattentiontoherfather’swords.Shewaslisteningtotheceaselessmoaningoftheadjutant,threehousesoff.

           “Oh,howterrible,”saidSónyareturningfromtheyardchilledandfrightened.“IbelievethewholeofMoscowwillburn,there’sanawfulglow!Natásha,dolook!Youcanseeitfromthewindow,”shesaidtohercousin,evidentlywishingtodistracthermind.

           ButNatáshalookedatherasifnotunderstandingwhatwassaidtoherandagainfixedhereyesonthecornerofthestove.Shehadbeeninthisconditionofstuporsincethemorning,whenSónya,tothesurpriseandannoyanceofthecountess,hadforsomeunaccountablereasonfounditnecessarytotellNatáshaofPrinceAndrew’swoundandofhisbeingwiththeirparty.ThecountesshadseldombeensoangrywithanyoneasshewaswithSónya.Sónyahadcriedandbeggedtobeforgivenandnow,asiftryingtoatoneforherfault,paidunceasingattentiontohercousin.

           “Look,Natásha,howdreadfullyitisburning!”saidshe.

           “What’sburning?”askedNatásha.“Oh,yes,Moscow.
