           Onthesixth,whichwashisnamedaywhenthehousewouldbefullofvisitors,NicholasknewhewouldhavetoexchangehisTartartunicforatailcoat,andputonnarrowbootswithpointedtoes,anddrivetothenewchurchhehadbuilt,andthenreceivevisitorswhowouldcometocongratulatehim,offerthemrefreshments,andtalkabouttheelectionsofthenobility;butheconsideredhimselfentitledtospendtheeveofthatdayinhisusualway.Heexaminedthebailiff’saccountsofthevillageinRyazánwhichbelongedtohiswife’snephew,wrotetwobusinessletters,andwalkedovertothegranaries,cattleyardsandstablesbeforedinner.Havingtakenprecautionsagainstthegeneraldrunkennesstobeexpectedonthemorrowbecauseitwasagreatsaint’sday,hereturnedtodinner,andwithouthavingtimeforaprivatetalkwithhiswifesatdownatthelongtablelaidfortwentypersons,atwhichthewholehouseholdhadassembled.
