           Thelastoftheinfantryhurriedlycrossedthebridge,squeezingtogetherastheyapproacheditasifpassingthroughafunnel.Atlastthebaggagewagonshadallcrossed,thecrushwasless,andthelastbattalioncameontothebridge.OnlyDenísov’ssquadronofhussarsremainedonthefarthersideofthebridgefacingtheenemy,whocouldbeseenfromthehillontheoppositebankbutwasnotyetvisiblefromthebridge,forthehorizonasseenfromthevalleythroughwhichtheriverflowedwasformedbytherisinggroundonlyhalfamileaway.AtthefootofthehilllaywastelandoverwhichafewgroupsofourCossackscoutsweremoving.Suddenlyontheroadatthetopofthehighground,artilleryandtroopsinblueuniformwereseen.TheseweretheFrench.AgroupofCossackscoutsretireddownthehillatatrot.AlltheofficersandmenofDenísov’ssquadron,thoughtheytriedtotalkofotherthingsandtolookinotherdirections,thoughtonlyofwhatwasthereonthehilltop,andkeptconstantlylookingatthepatchesappearingontheskyline,whichtheyknewtobetheenemy’stroops.TheweatherhadclearedagainsincenoonandthesunwasdescendingbrightlyupontheDanubeandthedarkhillsaroundit.Itwascalm,andatintervalsthebuglecallsandtheshoutsoftheenemycouldbeheardfromthehill.Therewasnoonenowbetweenthesquadronandtheenemyexceptafewscatteredskirmishers.Anemptyspaceofsomesevenhundredyardswasallthatseparatedthem.
