           AttheleveePrinceAndrewstoodamongtheAustrianofficersashehadbeentoldto,andtheEmperorFrancismerelylookedfixedlyintohisfaceandjustnoddedtohimwithhislonghead.Butafteritwasover,theadjutanthehadseenthepreviousdayceremoniouslyinformedBolkónskithattheEmperordesiredtogivehimanaudience.TheEmperorFrancisreceivedhimstandinginthemiddleoftheroom.BeforetheconversationbeganPrinceAndrewwasstruckbythefactthattheEmperorseemedconfusedandblushedasifnotknowingwhattosay.
