           Cossacks,hussars,andraggedRussianprisoners,whohadcomerunningfrombothsidesoftheroad,wereshoutingsomethingloudlyandincoherently.Agallant-lookingFrenchman,inablueovercoat,capless,andwithafrowningredface,hadbeendefendinghimselfagainstthehussars.WhenPétyagallopeduptheFrenchmanhadalreadyfallen.“Toolateagain!”flashedthroughPétya’smindandhegallopedontotheplacefromwhichtherapidfiringcouldbeheard.Theshotscamefromtheyardofthelandowner’shousehehadvisitedthenightbeforewithDólokhov.TheFrenchweremakingastandtherebehindawattlefenceinagardenthicklyovergrownwithbushesandwerefiringattheCossackswhocrowdedatthegateway.Throughthesmoke,asheapproachedthegate,PétyasawDólokhov,whosefacewasofapale-greenishtint,shoutingtohismen.“Goround!Waitfortheinfantry!”heexclaimedasPétyarodeuptohim.
