           Whentheyhadallriddenby,Denísovtouchedhishorseandrodedownthehill.Slippingontotheirhaunchesandsliding,thehorsesdescendedwiththeirridersintotheravine.PétyarodebesideDenísov,thepulsationofhisbodyconstantlyincreasing.Itwasgettinglighterandlighter,butthemiststillhiddistantobjects.Havingreachedthevalley,DenísovlookedbackandnoddedtoaCossackbesidehim.

           “Thesignal!”saidhe.

           TheCossackraisedhisarmandashotrangout.Inaninstantthetrampofhorsesgallopingforwardwasheard,shoutscamefromvarioussides,andthenmoreshots.

           Atthefirstsoundoftramplinghoofsandshouting,Pétyalashedhishorseandlooseninghisreingallopedforward,notheedingDenísovwhoshoutedathim.ItseemedtoPétyathatatthemomenttheshotwasfireditsuddenlybecameasbrightasnoon.Hegallopedtothebridge.Cossacksweregallopingalongtheroadinfrontofhim.OnthebridgehecollidedwithaCossackwhohadfallenbehind,buthegallopedon.Infrontofhimsoldiers,probablyFrenchmen,wererunningfromrighttoleftacrosstheroad.Oneofthemfellinthemudunderhishorse’sfeet.

           Cossackswerecrowdingaboutahut,busywithsomething.Fromthemidstofthatcrowdterriblescreamsarose.Pétyagallopedup,andthefirstthinghesawwasthepalefaceandtremblingjawofaFrenchman,clutchingthehandleofalancethathadbeenaimedathim.

           “Hurrah!...Lads!...ours!”shoutedPétya,andgivingreintohisexcitedhorsehegallopedforwardalongthevillagestreet.

           Hecouldhearshootingaheadofhim.
