           PétyawasasmusicalasNatáshaandmoresothanNicholas,buthadneverlearnedmusicorthoughtaboutit,andsothemelodythatunexpectedlycametohismindseemedtohimparticularlyfreshandattractive.Themusicbecamemoreandmoreaudible.Themelodygrewandpassedfromoneinstrumenttoanother.Andwhatwasplayedwasafugue—thoughPétyahadnottheleastconceptionofwhatafugueis.Eachinstrument—nowresemblingaviolinandnowahorn,butbetterandclearerthanviolinorhorn—playeditsownpart,andbeforeithadfinishedthemelodymergedwithanotherinstrumentthatbeganalmostthesameair,andthenwithathirdandafourth;andtheyallblendedintooneandagainbecameseparateandagainblended,nowintosolemnchurchmusic,nowintosomethingdazzlinglybrilliantandtriumphant.

           “Oh—why,thatwasinadream!”Pétyasaidtohimself,ashelurchedforward.“It’sinmyears.Butperhapsit’smusicofmyown.Well,goon,mymusic!Now!...”

           Heclosedhiseyes,and,fromallsidesasiffromadistance,soundsfluttered,grewintoharmonies,separated,blended,andagainallmingledintothesamesweetandsolemnhymn.“Oh,thisisdelightful!AsmuchasIlikeandasIlike!”saidPétyatohimself.Hetriedtoconductthatenormousorchestra.
