           Perhapshewasreallysittingonawagon,butitmightverywellbethathewasnotsittingonawagonbutonaterriblyhightowerfromwhich,ifhefell,hewouldhavetofallforawholedayorawholemonth,orgoonfallingandneverreachthebottom.PerhapsitwasjusttheCossack,Likhachëv,whowassittingunderthewagon,butitmightbethekindest,bravest,mostwonderful,mostsplendidmanintheworld,whomnooneknewof.Itmightreallyhavebeenthatthehussarcameforwaterandwentbackintothehollow,butperhapshehadsimplyvanished—disappearedaltogetheranddissolvedintonothingness.

           NothingPétyacouldhaveseennowwouldhavesurprisedhim.Hewasinafairykingdomwhereeverythingwaspossible.

           Helookedupatthesky.Andtheskywasafairyrealmliketheearth.Itwasclearing,andoverthetopsofthetreescloudswereswiftlysailingasifunveilingthestars.Sometimesitlookedasifthecloudswerepassing,andaclearblackskyappeared.Sometimesitseemedasiftheblackspaceswereclouds.Sometimestheskyseemedtoberisinghigh,highoverhead,andthenitseemedtosinksolowthatonecouldtouchitwithone’shand.

           Pétya’seyesbegantocloseandheswayedalittle.

           Thetreesweredripping.Quiettalkingwasheard.Thehorsesneighedandjostledoneanother.Someonesnored.

           “Ozheg-zheg,Ozheg-zheg...”hissedthesaberagainstthewhetstone,andsuddenlyPétyaheardanharmoniousorchestraplayingsomeunknown,sweetlysolemnhymn.
