           Hewouldoftensaytheexactoppositeofwhathehadsaidonapreviousoccasion,yetbothwouldberight.Helikedtotalkandhetalkedwell,adorninghisspeechwithtermsofendearmentandwithfolksayingswhichPierrethoughtheinventedhimself,butthechiefcharmofhistalklayinthefactthatthecommonestevents—sometimesjustsuchasPierrehadwitnessedwithouttakingnoticeofthem—assumedinKaratáev’sacharacterofsolemnfitness.Helikedtohearthefolktalesoneofthesoldiersusedtotellofanevening(theywerealwaysthesame),butmostofallhelikedtohearstoriesofreallife.Hewouldsmilejoyfullywhenlisteningtosuchstories,nowandthenputtinginawordoraskingaquestiontomakethemoralbeautyofwhathewastoldcleartohimself.Karatáevhadnoattachments,friendships,orlove,asPierreunderstoodthem,butlovedandlivedaffectionatelywitheverythinglifebroughthimincontactwith,particularlywithman—notanyparticularman,butthosewithwhomhehappenedtobe.
