           Itwasevidentthatheneverconsideredwhathehadsaidorwasgoingtosay,andconsequentlytherapidityandjusticeofhisintonationhadanirresistiblepersuasiveness.

           Hisphysicalstrengthandagilityduringthefirstdaysofhisimprisonmentweresuchthatheseemednottoknowwhatfatigueandsicknessmeant.Everynightbeforelyingdown,hesaid:“Lord,laymedownasastoneandraisemeupasaloaf!”andeverymorningongettingup,hesaid:“Ilaydownandcurledup,Igetupandshakemyself.”Andindeedheonlyhadtoliedown,tofallasleeplikeastone,andheonlyhadtoshakehimself,tobereadywithoutamoment’sdelayforsomework,justaschildrenarereadytoplaydirectlytheyawake.Hecoulddoeverything,notverywellbutnotbadly.Hebaked,cooked,sewed,planed,andmendedboots.Hewasalwaysbusy,andonlyatnightallowedhimselfconversation—ofwhichhewasfond—andsongs.Hedidnotsinglikeatrainedsingerwhoknowsheislistenedto,butlikethebirds,evidentlygivingventtothesoundsinthesamewaythatonestretchesoneselforwalksabouttogetridofstiffness,andthesoundswerealwayshigh-pitched,mournful,delicate,andalmostfeminine,andhisfaceatsuchtimeswasveryserious.

           Havingbeentakenprisonerandallowedhisbeardtogrow,heseemedtohavethrownoffallthathadbeenforceduponhim—everythingmilitaryandalientohimself—andhadreturnedtohisformerpeasanthabits.

           “Asoldieronleave—ashirtoutsidebreeches,”hewouldsay.
