           WhenNatáshasettoworktwocaseswerestandingopenintheballroom,onealmostfullupwithcrockery,theotherwithcarpets.Therewasalsomuchchinastandingonthetables,andstillmorewasbeingbroughtinfromthestoreroom.Athirdcasewasneededandservantshadgonetofetchit.

           “Sónya,waitabit—we’llpackeverythingintothese,”saidNatásha.

           “Youcan’t,Miss,wehavetriedto,”saidthebutler’sassistant.

           “No,waitaminute,please.”

           AndNatáshabeganrapidlytakingoutofthecasedishesandplateswrappedinpaper.

           “Thedishesmustgoinhereamongthecarpets,”saidshe.

           “Why,it’samercyifwecangetthecarpetsaloneintothreecases,”saidthebutler’sassistant.

           “Oh,wait,please!”AndNatáshabeganrapidlyanddeftlysortingoutthethings.“Thesearen’tneeded,”saidshe,puttingasidesomeplatesofKievware.“These—yes,thesemustgoamongthecarpets,”shesaid,referringtotheSaxonychinadishes.

           “Don’t,Natásha!Leaveitalone!We’llgetitallpacked,”urgedSónyareproachfully.

           “Whatayoungladysheis!”remarkedthemajor-domo.

           ButNatáshawouldnotgivein.Sheturnedeverythingoutandbeganquicklyrepacking,decidingthattheinferiorRussiancarpetsandunnecessarycrockeryshouldnotbetakenatall.Wheneverythinghadbeentakenoutofthecases,theyrecommencedpacking,anditturnedoutthatwhenthecheaperthingsnotworthtakinghadnearlyallbeenrejected,thevaluableonesreallydidallgointothetwocases.Onlythelidofthecasecontainingthecarpetswouldnotshutdown.
