           “Idon’tknowifitwouldbeallowed,”repliedtheofficerinaweakvoice.“Hereisourcommandingofficer...askhim,”andhepointedtoastoutmajorwhowaswalkingbackalongthestreetpasttherowofcarts.

           Natáshaglancedwithfrightenedeyesatthefaceofthewoundedofficerandatoncewenttomeetthemajor.

           “Maythewoundedmenstayinourhouse?”sheasked.

           Themajorraisedhishandtohiscapwithasmile.

           “Whichonedoyouwant,Ma’am’selle?”saidhe,screwinguphiseyesandsmiling.

           Natáshaquietlyrepeatedherquestion,andherfaceandwholemannerweresoserious,thoughshewasstillholdingtheendsofherhandkerchief,thatthemajorceasedsmilingandaftersomereflection—asifconsideringinhowfarthethingwaspossible—repliedintheaffirmative.

           “Ohyes,whynot?Theymay,”hesaid.

           Withaslightinclinationofherhead,NatáshasteppedbackquicklytoMávraKuzmínichna,whostoodtalkingcompassionatelytotheofficer.

           “Theymay.Hesaystheymay!”whisperedNatásha.

           ThecartinwhichtheofficerlaywasturnedintotheRostóvs’yard,anddozensofcartswithwoundedmenbeganattheinvitationofthetownsfolktoturnintotheyardsandtodrawupattheentrancesofthehousesinPovarskáyaStreet.Natáshawasevidentlypleasedtobedealingwithnewpeopleoutsidetheordinaryroutineofherlife.SheandMávraKuzmínichnatriedtogetasmanyofthewoundedaspossibleintotheiryard.

           “YourPapamustbetold,though,”saidMávraKuzmínichna.
