           ForawhileshehadstoodbesideSónyawhilethechinawasbeingpackedandtriedtohelp,butsoongaveitupandwenttoherroomtopackherownthings.Atfirstshefounditamusingtogiveawaydressesandribbonstothemaids,butwhenthatwasdoneandwhatwaslefthadstilltobepacked,shefounditdull.

           “Dunyásha,youpack!Youwill,won’tyou,dear?”AndwhenDunyáshawillinglypromisedtodoitallforher,Natáshasatdownonthefloor,tookheroldballdress,andfellintoareveriequiteunrelatedtowhatoughttohaveoccupiedherthoughtsnow.Shewasrousedfromherreveriebythetalkofthemaidsinthenextroom(whichwastheirs)andbythesoundoftheirhurriedfootstepsgoingtothebackporch.Natáshagotupandlookedoutofthewindow.Anenormouslylongrowofcartsfullofwoundedmenhadstoppedinthestreet.

           Thehousekeeper,theoldnurse,thecooks,coachmen,maids,footmen,postilions,andscullionsstoodatthegate,staringatthewounded.

           Natásha,throwingacleanpockethandkerchiefoverherhairandholdinganendofitineachhand,wentoutintothestreet.

           Theformerhousekeeper,oldMávraKuzmínichna,hadsteppedoutofthecrowdbythegate,goneuptoacartwithahoodconstructedofbastmats,andwasspeakingtoapaleyoungofficerwholayinside.Natáshamovedafewstepsforwardandstoppedshyly,stillholdingherhandkerchief,andlistenedtowhatthehousekeeperwassaying.

           “ThenyouhavenobodyinMoscow?”shewassaying.“Youwouldbemorecomfortablesomewhereinahouse...inours,forinstance...thefamilyareleaving.
