           Butwhatdistressedtheprincessmostofallwasherfather’sirritability,whichwasalwaysdirectedagainstherandhadoflateamountedtocruelty.Hadheforcedhertoprostrateherselftothegroundallnight,hadhebeatenherormadeherfetchwoodorwater,itwouldneverhaveenteredhermindtothinkherpositionhard;butthislovingdespot—themorecruelbecausehelovedherandforthatreasontormentedhimselfandher—knewhownotmerelytohurtandhumiliateherdeliberately,buttoshowherthatshewasalwaystoblameforeverything.OflatehehadexhibitedanewtraitthattormentedPrincessMarymorethananythingelse;thiswashisever-increasingintimacywithMademoiselleBourienne.Theideathatatthefirstmomentofreceivingthenewsofhisson’sintentionshadoccurredtohiminjest—thatifAndrewgotmarriedhehimselfwouldmarryBourienne—hadevidentlypleasedhim,andlatterlyhehadpersistently,andasitseemedtoPrincessMarymerelytooffendher,shownspecialendearmentstothecompanionandexpressedhisdissatisfactionwithhisdaughterbydemonstrationsofloveofBourienne.

           OnedayinMoscowinPrincessMary’spresence(shethoughtherfatherdiditpurposelywhenshewasthere)theoldprincekissedMademoiselleBourienne’shandand,drawinghertohim,embracedheraffectionately.PrincessMaryflushedandranoutoftheroom.AfewminuteslaterMademoiselleBouriennecameintoPrincessMary’sroomsmilingandmakingcheerfulremarksinheragreeablevoice.
