           Borísdidnotappeartonoticetheconstraintthenewcomerproducedand,withthesamepleasantcomposureandthesameveiledlookinhiseyeswithwhichhehadmetRostóv,triedtoenliventheconversation.OneoftheFrenchmen,withthepolitenesscharacteristicofhiscountrymen,addressedtheobstinatelytaciturnRostóv,sayingthatthelatterhadprobablycometoTilsittoseetheEmperor.

           “No,Icameonbusiness,”repliedRostóv,briefly.

           RostóvhadbeenoutofhumorfromthemomenthenoticedthelookofdissatisfactiononBorís’face,andasalwayshappenstothoseinabadhumor,itseemedtohimthateveryoneregardedhimwithaversionandthathewasineverybody’sway.Hereallywasintheirway,forhealonetooknopartintheconversationwhichagainbecamegeneral.Thelooksthevisitorscastonhimseemedtosay:“Andwhatishesittingherefor?”HeroseandwentuptoBorís.

           “Anyhow,I’minyourway,”hesaidinalowtone.“ComeandtalkovermybusinessandI’llgoaway.”

           “Oh,no,notatall,”saidBorís.“Butifyouaretired,comeandliedowninmyroomandhavearest.”

           “Yes,really...”

           TheywentintothelittleroomwhereBorísslept.Rostóv,withoutsittingdown,beganatonce,irritably(asifBorísweretoblameinsomeway)tellinghimaboutDenísov’saffair,askinghimwhether,throughhisgeneral,hecouldandwouldintercedewiththeEmperoronDenísov’sbehalfandgetDenísov’spetitionhandedin.WhenheandBoríswerealone,RostóvfeltforthefirsttimethathecouldnotlookBorísinthefacewithoutasenseofawkwardness
