           Rostóv,incommonwiththewholearmyfromwhichhecame,wasfarfromhavingexperiencedthechangeoffeelingtowardNapoleonandtheFrench—whofrombeingfoeshadsuddenlybecomefriends—thathadtakenplaceatheadquartersandinBorís.Inthearmy,BonaparteandtheFrenchwerestillregardedwithmingledfeelingsofanger,contempt,andfear.Onlyrecently,talkingwithoneofPlátov’sCossackofficers,RostóvhadarguedthatifNapoleonweretakenprisonerhewouldbetreatednotasasovereign,butasacriminal.Quitelately,happeningtomeetawoundedFrenchcolonelontheroad,RostóvhadmaintainedwithheatthatpeacewasimpossiblebetweenalegitimatesovereignandthecriminalBonaparte.RostóvwasthereforeunpleasantlystruckbythepresenceofFrenchofficersinBorís’lodging,dressedinuniformshehadbeenaccustomedtoseefromquiteadifferentpointofviewfromtheoutpostsoftheflank.AssoonashenoticedaFrenchofficer,whothrusthisheadoutofthedoor,thatwarlikefeelingofhostilitywhichhealwaysexperiencedatthesightoftheenemysuddenlyseizedhim.HestoppedatthethresholdandaskedinRussianwhetherDrubetskóylivedthere.Borís,hearingastrangevoiceintheanteroom,cameouttomeethim.
