           Inhersnugroom,withlampsburningbeforetheiconstand,ayoungladwithalongnoseandlonghair,wearingamonk’scassock,satonthesofabesideher,behindasamovar.Nearthem,inanarmchair,satathin,shriveled,oldwoman,withameekexpressiononherchildlikeface.

           “Andrew,whydidn’tyouwarnme?”saidtheprincess,withmildreproach,asshestoodbeforeherpilgrimslikeahenbeforeherchickens.

           “Charméedevousvoir.Jesuistrèscontentedevousvoir,”*shesaidtoPierreashekissedherhand.Shehadknownhimasachild,andnowhisfriendshipwithAndrew,hismisfortunewithhiswife,andaboveallhiskindly,simplefacedisposedherfavorablytowardhim.Shelookedathimwithherbeautifulradianteyesandseemedtosay,“Ilikeyouverymuch,butpleasedon’tlaughatmypeople.”Afterexchangingthefirstgreetings,theysatdown.

           “Ah,andIvánushkaisheretoo!”saidPrinceAndrew,glancingwithasmileattheyoungpilgrim.

           ItwasevidentthatPrinceAndrew’sironicaltonetowardthepilgrimsandPrincessMary’shelplessattemptstoprotectthemweretheircustomarylong-establishedrelationsonthematter.
