           Afterthesewords,theMason,asiftiredbyhislongdiscourse,againleanedhisarmsonthebackofthesofaandclosedhiseyes.Pierrelookedatthataged,stern,motionless,almostlifelessfaceandmovedhislipswithoututteringasound.Hewishedtosay,“Yes,avile,idle,viciouslife!”butdarednotbreakthesilence.
