           SomesaidthereportthattheEmperorwaswoundedwascorrect,othersthatitwasnot,andexplainedthefalserumorthathadspreadbythefactthattheEmperor’scarriagehadreallygallopedfromthefieldofbattlewiththepaleandterrifiedOber-HofmarschalCountTolstóy,whohadriddenouttothebattlefieldwithothersintheEmperor’ssuite.OneofficertoldRostóvthathehadseensomeonefromheadquartersbehindthevillagetotheleft,andthitherRostóvrode,nothopingtofindanyonebutmerelytoeasehisconscience.WhenhehadriddenabouttwomilesandhadpassedthelastoftheRussiantroops,hesaw,nearakitchengardenwithaditchroundit,twomenonhorsebackfacingtheditch.OnewithawhiteplumeinhishatseemedfamiliartoRostóv;theotheronabeautifulchestnuthorse(whichRostóvfanciedhehadseenbefore)rodeuptotheditch,struckhishorsewithhisspurs,andgivingitthereinleapedlightlyover.Onlyalittleearthcrumbledfromthebankunderthehorse’shindhoofs.Turningthehorsesharply,heagainjumpedtheditch,anddeferentiallyaddressedthehorsemanwiththewhiteplumes,evidentlysuggestingthatheshoulddothesame.Therider,whosefigureseemedfamiliartoRostóvandinvoluntarilyrivetedhisattention,madeagestureofrefusalwithhisheadandhandandbythatgestureRostóvinstantlyrecognizedhislamentedandadoredmonarch.

           “Butitcan’tbehe,aloneinthemidstofthisemptyfield!”thoughtRostóv.AtthatmomentAlexanderturnedhisheadandRostóvsawthebelovedfeaturesthatweresodeeplyengravedonhismemory.
