           Rostóv,stilllookingroundtowardthefiresandtheshouts,rodewiththesergeanttomeetsomemountedmenwhowereridingalongtheline.Onewasonawhitehorse.PrinceBagratiónandPrinceDolgorúkovwiththeiradjutantshadcometowitnessthecuriousphenomenonofthelightsandshoutsintheenemy’scamp.RostóvrodeuptoBagratión,reportedtohim,andthenjoinedtheadjutantslisteningtowhatthegeneralsweresaying.

           “Believeme,”saidPrinceDolgorúkov,addressingBagratión,“itisnothingbutatrick!Hehasretreatedandorderedtherearguardtokindlefiresandmakeanoisetodeceiveus.”

           “Hardly,”saidBagratión.“Isawthemthiseveningonthatknoll;iftheyhadretreatedtheywouldhavewithdrawnfromthattoo....Officer!”saidBagratióntoRostóv,“aretheenemy’sskirmishersstillthere?”

           “Theyweretherethisevening,butnowIdon’tknow,yourexcellency.ShallIgowithsomeofmyhussarstosee?”repliedRostóv.

           Bagratiónstoppedand,beforereplying,triedtoseeRostóv’sfaceinthemist.

           “Well,goandsee,”hesaid,afterapause.

           “Yes,sir.”

           Rostóvspurredhishorse,calledtoSergeantFédchenkoandtwootherhussars,toldthemtofollowhim,andtrotteddownhillinthedirectionfromwhichtheshoutingcame.Hefeltbothfrightenedandpleasedtoberidingalonewiththreehussarsintothatmysteriousanddangerousmistydistancewherenoonehadbeenbeforehim.
