           Weyrother,withthegestureofamantoobusytoloseamoment,glancedatKutúzovand,havingconvincedhimselfthathewasasleep,tookupapaperandinaloud,monotonousvoicebegantoreadoutthedispositionsfortheimpendingbattle,underaheadingwhichhealsoreadout:

           Thedispositionswereverycomplicatedanddifficult.Theybeganasfollows:

           “Astheenemy’sleftwingrestsonwoodedhillsandhisrightextendsalongKobelnitzandSokolnitzbehindthepondsthatarethere,whilewe,ontheotherhand,withourleftwingbyfaroutflankhisright,itisadvantageoustoattacktheenemy’slatterwingespeciallyifweoccupythevillagesofSokolnitzandKobelnitz,wherebywecanbothfallonhisflankandpursuehimovertheplainbetweenSchlappanitzandtheThuerassaforest,avoidingthedefilesofSchlappanitzandBellowitzwhichcovertheenemy’sfront.Forthisobjectitisnecessarythat...Thefirstcolumnmarches...Thesecondcolumnmarches...Thethirdcolumnmarches...”andsoon,readWeyrother.

           Thegeneralsseemedtolistenreluctantlytothedifficultdispositions.Thetall,fair-hairedGeneralBuxhöwdenstood,leaninghisbackagainstthewall,hiseyesfixedonaburningcandle,andseemednottolistenoreventowishtobethoughttolisten.ExactlyoppositeWeyrother,withhisglisteningwide-openeyesfixeduponhimandhismustachetwistedupwards,sattheruddyMilorádovichinamilitarypose,hiselbowsturnedoutwards,hishandsonhisknees,andhisshouldersraised.
