           “Youknowthey’vecome,Marie?”saidthelittleprincess,waddlingin,andsinkingheavilyintoanarmchair.

           Shewasnolongerintheloosegownshegenerallyworeinthemorning,buthadononeofherbestdresses.Herhairwascarefullydoneandherfacewasanimated,which,however,didnotconcealitssunkenandfadedoutlines.DressedassheusedtobeinPetersburgsociety,itwasstillmorenoticeablehowmuchplainershehadbecome.SomeunobtrusivetouchhadbeenaddedtoMademoiselleBourienne’stoiletwhichrenderedherfreshandprettyfaceyetmoreattractive.

           “What!Areyougoingtoremainasyouare,dearprincess?”shebegan.
