           Thelittleoldmanwiththehalf-closedeyeswastheregreedilygnawingamuttonbone,andthegeneralwhohadservedblamelesslyfortwenty-twoyears,flushedbyaglassofvodkaandthedinner;andthestaffofficerwiththesignetring,andZherkóv,uneasilyglancingatthemall,andPrinceAndrew,pale,withcompressedlipsandfeverishlyglitteringeyes.

           InacornerofthehutstoodastandardcapturedfromtheFrench,andtheaccountantwiththenaïvefacewasfeelingitstexture,shakinghisheadinperplexity—perhapsbecausethebannerreallyinterestedhim,perhapsbecauseitwashardforhim,hungryashewas,tolookonatadinnerwheretherewasnoplaceforhim.InthenexthuttherewasaFrenchcolonelwhohadbeentakenprisonerbyourdragoons.Ourofficerswereflockingintolookathim.PrinceBagratiónwasthankingtheindividualcommandersandinquiringintodetailsoftheactionandourlosses.ThegeneralwhoseregimenthadbeeninspectedatBraunauwasinformingtheprincethatassoonastheactionbeganhehadwithdrawnfromthewood,musteredthemenwhowerewoodcutting,and,allowingtheFrenchtopasshim,hadmadeabayonetchargewithtwobattalionsandhadbrokenuptheFrenchtroops.

           “WhenIsaw,yourexcellency,thattheirfirstbattalionwasdisorganized,Istoppedintheroadandthought:‘I’llletthemcomeonandwillmeetthemwiththefireofthewholebattalion’—andthat’swhatIdid.”

           Thegeneralhadsowishedtodothisandwassosorryhehadnotmanagedtodoitthatitseemedtohimasifithadreallyhappened.
