           Rostóv,too,draggedhimselftothefire.Frompain,cold,anddamp,afeverishshiveringshookhiswholebody.Drowsinesswasirresistiblymasteringhim,buthekeptawakebyanexcruciatingpaininhisarm,forwhichhecouldfindnosatisfactoryposition.Hekeptclosinghiseyesandthenagainlookingatthefire,whichseemedtohimdazzlinglyred,andatthefeeble,round-shoulderedfigureofTúshinwhowassittingcross-leggedlikeaTurkbesidehim.Túshin’slarge,kind,intelligenteyeswerefixedwithsympathyandcommiserationonRostóv,whosawthatTúshinwithhiswholeheartwishedtohelphimbutcouldnot.

           Fromallsideswereheardthefootstepsandtalkoftheinfantry,whowerewalking,drivingpast,andsettlingdownallaround.Thesoundofvoices,thetrampingfeet,thehorses’hoofsmovinginmud,thecracklingofwoodfiresnearandafar,mergedintoonetremulousrumble.

           Itwasnolonger,asbefore,adark,unseenriverflowingthroughthegloom,butadarkseaswellingandgraduallysubsidingafterastorm.Rostóvlookedatandlistenedlistlesslytowhatpassedbeforeandaroundhim.Aninfantrymancametothefire,squattedonhisheels,heldhishandstotheblaze,andturnedawayhisface.

           “Youdon’tmindyourhonor?”heaskedTúshin.“I’velostmycompany,yourhonor.Idon’tknowwhere...suchbadluck!”

           Withthesoldier,aninfantryofficerwithabandagedcheekcameuptothebonfire,andaddressingTúshinaskedhimtohavethegunsmovedatrifletoletawagongopast.Afterhehadgone,twosoldiersrushedtothecampfire.
